From Al C. In 2005, my house was damaged by fire. It is a split level design and the center floor which consist of the front room, dining room and kitchen was burned from the floor joists, up. The rest of the house had smoke damage. I hired Sundburg construction to do the restoration. The restoration consisted of tear down of the middle level and rebuild of this level. This area was redesigned using the existing foot print. Some of the major changes consisted of the addition of a walk-in pantry, opening up of the kitchen to the front room area, removal of the fireplace, French doors leading to the deck, tray ceiling in the dining area and a redesigned roof line. The roof line was redesigned to eliminate a shed roof over the kitchen and dining room and replace it with a stepped up roof line across the front of the house. The step-up allowed for additional windows over the kitchen area. In the original design the kitchen was dark and the new design corrected this problem. The rest of the house was gutted on the interior to the wall studs. Some old termite damage was repaired at this time. New electrical, HVAC system, water heater, windows and plumbing fixtures were installed. The cabinetry for the kitchen and baths were custom built. The bath tubs were high end cultured marble garden tubs. These were refinished due to smoke stains which had penetrated the cultured marble. The tub surrounds were retiled. The project went very smoothly. Daryl Sundberg was very cooperative in making changes to the original design which added value to the property by upgrading (more class) and eliminating original design issues which made the house more livable. The project came in less expensive than I had originally estimated. From a time to completion point of view it was excellent but could have been quicker if I had not been as involved in requesting changes and had been faster in making the finish decisions. I was very happy with the project. In summary, I was very pleased with Sundberg Construction and would highly recommend them to others for major restorations or new construction. Thank you Al C.
Daryl the Engineer Builder: Like most people, I had no idea how to find architectural house plans for the house I wanted much less a contractor/builder to create it. I did finally find THE house plans I liked. Then I asked friends if they knew about any builders they would recommend. That’s how Daryl Sundberg who is a contractor, builder, and engineer all in one and more, came to build our house. This would be a once-only experience for my husband and myself and we wanted someone with experience and a lot of knowledge about energy-saving solar panels and low-energy wiring as well as the literal engineering problems of building a house on a hill. Daryl has these qualifications and during our year together, we found him to be conscientious, thorough, very knowledgeable on building homes and building codes, every aspect of the house from foundation to roofing and in between, and best yet, able to explain all that volume of information we needed to know as the house was being built. We were “involved” in every step of the building and in all the problems that started from the very beginning such as a large ledge of granite under the house and drainage/erosion issues in the yard. Daryl always came up with a solution and went way beyond the extra mile. We actually had people stop their cars and talk to Daryl during construction. Other builders and even the owners of a store a block away came to see the house during construction. Daryl was happy to talk to anyone and most of all to us. Our house is really OUR house and we encourage our family and friends to share in the fun we are having with the house that Daryl built. I think all of us who were involved in creating the house were a little sad when the building phase ended. I think anyone would have to search for some time to find a more competent, dedicated, ethical, and efficient builder than Daryl Sundberg. Paddy and John K., July 8, 2012
